In the early days of Eaton County, Michigan, prisoners were housed in a variety of places, including the county courthouse and the local sheriff's office. In 1851, the county constructed its first jail, a small, one-room building made of logs. The jail was located on the courthouse square in Charlotte, the county seat.

The Old Jail

The log jail was used for many years, but it was eventually deemed to be inadequate. In 1878, the county constructed a new jail, a two-story brick building that was located on the same site as the log jail. The new jail was more secure and had more space for prisoners.

The old jail was eventually demolished, but the new jail is still in use today. It is now known as the Eaton County Historical Museum and houses exhibits on the history of the county and its jail.
